Privacy, accessibility and data practices

On your device only: your lesson progress (which lessons you've completed, quiz completion, your field notes), your display preferences (theme, text size, contrast, motion) and your last-visited lesson. This lives in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device, and we cannot see it.

On our servers: nothing, in the current version. There are no accounts, no analytics trackers and no cookies set by us.

Fonts: pages load two typefaces from Google Fonts, which involves your browser requesting files from Google's servers. If you prefer to avoid this, your system fonts will be used automatically if the request is blocked — nothing breaks.

No. Every demonstration on this site — the sentence completer, the tokeniser, the temperature laboratory and the rest — is a simulation that runs entirely in your browser. Values are illustrative and labelled as such. If a future lesson ever includes a live AI interaction (used only where experiencing real variability is the point), you will see a clear notice immediately before it, and it will be optional.

On the lesson map page you can download your progress as a file, import it on another device, or reset it entirely. Clearing your browser's site data also removes everything. Because guest progress lives only in this browser, it can be lost if browsing data is cleared — download a copy if it matters to you.

Optional accounts (for progress sync, certificates and a capability profile) will collect the minimum needed — an email address — and will let you view, export and delete your data. Local and account progress will only ever be merged with your confirmation, keeping the most advanced state. Learning will never require an account. This page will be updated in full before any account feature launches.

Leaving feedback requires signing in with your email (a one-click link — no password stored by us). Your feedback, email and chosen display name are stored in our database (hosted in Australia via Supabase, Sydney region), reviewed by a human, and only the display name and message are ever published. Learning never requires sign-in.

The "Ask the Machine" chatbot asks for your first name, last name and a non-disposable email before chatting. Your questions are sent to an AI service (Anthropic's Claude) to generate answers — this is the one live-AI feature on the site, and it is clearly separate from lessons, which remain fully simulated in your browser. Chat identity is kept for your browser session only; feedback you file via the chatbot is stored as above. Don't share sensitive personal, health or financial information in chat — the same advice Lesson 19 teaches.

This site targets WCAG 2.2 AA. Measures include: semantic HTML with skip links and logical headings; full keyboard operability with visible focus; screen-reader announcements for state changes; text alternatives for every visual, with expanded descriptions for teaching diagrams; reflow at 320 px; text scaling to 200% and browser zoom beyond; light, dark and increased-contrast themes tested independently; reduced-motion support (system preference and manual toggle); touch targets of at least 44 px for primary controls; no time limits anywhere; and print styles for summaries and checklists.
